East Macedonia and Thrace
East Macedonia and Thrace is one of the thirteen peripheries of Greece, consisting of the eastern part of the region of Macedonia along with the region of Thrace. It is divided into Macedonian regions of Drama and Kavala and the Thracian prefectures of Xanthi, Rhodope and Evros.
Drama use to be a textile- clothing industry, these have mainly closed down and moved across the border to Bulgaria. Other sources of income are now generated through agriculture, mainly tobacco plantations; small scale mining (marble) and forestry.
The climate is mainly Mediterranean in the southern areas, with cold winters.
