The local village is 1.5 km or 20 mins walk and boasts an excellent boulangerie.
The coastline stretches from Royan in the south to Ile de Re in the north with the nearest beaches being about 25 mins away.
Local markets are held at least weekly in Rochefort(3 times weekly), St Savinien, Saintes and La Rochelle- to name but a few.
During July and August, there are many "Wine Fairs" where you will have good opportunities to taste and buy at competitive prices.
The owners, who have a house about 12 miles away, will be happy to advise on local area matters at any time.
If you want a night in and are sick of cooking, why not dine on the Garden Patio, our venue for varied cuisine from South East Asian and Indian through to most European. Just think; no driving and no babysitting involved.
For off season breaks, the house is double-glazed and fully centrally heated. Additionally, two large open fire places can provide attractive welcoming log fires. You can experience the romantic sort of Christmas that now exists only on traditional Xmas cards!
About the local area
GOLF courses abound. HORSE-RIDING is also very popular hereabouts. The rolling countryside lends itself to CYCLING and RAMBLING.
Local area FLIGHTS in a light aeroplane have proven to be very popular. For as little as Euros 30 per person, you can fly over the beaches and countryside for a birdseye view of our beautiful environs with the owner, who is a professional airline pilot. Your aerial photos will be a lasting memory of this beautiful countryside.
La Palmyre ZOO is about 45 mins south and FUTUROSCOPE is just over an hour away at Poitiers. Bordeaux and the associated vineyards are similarly close to the south, as is the Loire to the north.
CYCLING is an excellent leisure way of exploring the local area. We can arrange either mountain or road bikes for you. They can be delivered to the house.
Only ten minutes pleasant stroll down the garden, you can enjoy a pleasant day FISHING in the River Boutonne.
Chez Blaireau lies between the Charente and Boutonne rivers, so all WATER ACTIVITIES are available. RIVER CRUISES can be arranged as close as St Savinien.
Cognac is only a 30 minute drive to the southeast, and a visit to any of the numerous distilleries is both a delight and an education. The beautiful Medoc region is just over an hour away via the ferry from Royan.
What about an evening in? Eat on the beautiful patio with garden views. No hassle of cooking; no baby-sitting problems, and a wide choice from the menu of the owners who are both enthusiastic foodies. Be it French, other European, or Asian, you are bound to find something to appeal, we feel sure.
The garden backs onto the marais, or marshland, and birds of numerous varieties are here in abundance. Truly a "Twitchers" paradise. Specifically, seen in our garden, we have the following birds not native in UK:
Black Kite, Marsh Harrier, Black Redstart, Purple Heron, Stork, Warblers various, Hoopoe, White Throat, Buzzard and Golden Orioles.
