Ceuta (Arabic Sebta), the African port nearest to Europe is situated at the eastern entrance to the Straits of Gibraltar and is an enclave under Spanish sovereignty (plaza de soberania) on the Moroccan coast. It has a surface area of only 19.4 sq.km.

Ceuta is dominated by a hill called Monte Hacho, on which there is a fort occupied by the Spanish Army. Monte Hacho is one of the possible locations for the southern Pillars of Hercules of Greek Legend, the other possibility being Jebel Musa.
